Mani Ratnam was born as Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam Iyer on June 2, 1956 to a Tamil Brahmin family in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He did his MBA and worked as management consultant before entering into the industry. It was his brother and producer Venkateswaran who introduced him to the film industry. He worked with top class technicians in India to gain the required experience. It was in the year 1983 he made his directorial debut with a Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi, starring Anil Kapoor. But his first commercial success happened with the film Mouna Raagam in 1986.
He directed films in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. He is particularly known for his eye for technical detail in the art of film making, He often makes movies inspired by real-life events & famous epics. Mani is widely recognized for directing the critically acclaimed films Mouna Raagam, Nayakudu, Anjali, Iddharu, Geethanjali, Yuva, Roja, Bombay, Dil Se and many more. It can be noted here that the movies he had directed had musical scores by only Ilaiyaraja & A.R.Rahman till date. He was awarded with several National Film Awards, Film fare Awards and International film awards for his excellence in the field of direction. Mani Ratnam is undoubtedly a huge asset to the world of cinema.

He is none other than the musical maestro Ilayaraja who is celebrating his birthday today. Ilayaraja was born as Gnanadesikan on June 2, 1943 to Daniel Ramaswamy and Chinna Tayammal of Pannaipuram in Teni district of Tamil Nadu. He started his career with a cultural troupe of Communist Party of India. But for the first time he composed the music at the age of 14 for script written by Tamil writer Kannadasan on the first Prime Minister of India. It was in the year 1976 he turned as a full fledged music composer for the film Annakkili (Ramachiluka in Telugu). Right from that day there is no look back for him in his musical journey. He enthralled the music lovers of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi languages.
The Tamil Nadu government felicitated Ilayaraja with 'Kalaimamani' award, while he was awarded with honorary doctorates by Annamalai University, Andhra Pradesh government, Kerala government, Madhya Pradesh government and Arizona of the US.Ilayaraja has composed over 4500 songs and provided film scores for more than 900 movies in a career spanning almost 30 years. He has received the prestigious Padma Bhushan and won the National Film Award thrice.Today, both of his sons Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthik Raja are noted music directors in the industry.
