The moment Sridevi stepped on the ramp, the main show area was filled with cheers as the audience couldn’t stop looking at Bollywood actress Sridevi. She looked stunning in a black gown as she walked the ramp for jewellery designer Queenie Dhody at the inaugural jewelery show of HDIL India Couture Week here late Monday. "She is looking so stunning. Just look at her, she is so beautiful," said a mesmerized member of the audience.
As soon as she started walking the ramp, some one from the audience shouted: "Come on Sridevi, you are the best." It was not just the audience, even Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan, Dimple Kapadia, Twinkle Khanna, Sanjay Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Dia Mirza, Zayed Khan, Karan Johar and her husband Boney Kapoor clapped relentlessly till she left the ramp. "She looked like a diva. Just look at her, it seems that she is getting younger day by day. The way she has maintained herself is amazing," Raveena Tandon said.
This is the first time that HDIL-ICW had a high-end jewellery show that featured four jewellery designers - Devaunshi Mehta, Farah Khan, Queenie Dhody and Maheep Kapoor - who came out with their dazzling collections. Talking about her jewellery line Dhody said that high-end jewellery had become very popular among people. "People now want to own a piece of jewellery that is exclusive. This exquisite line of hand-made jewellery has both precious and semi-precious stones with fine craftsmanship that makes it very exclusive and everyone should at least own one piece," she said.

IT’S just getting bigger and better for Surya. After Varanam Aayiram and the stupendous success of Ayan, he’s now set to storm the box office with Aadhavan this Diwali. Surya, who co-stars with Nayanthara, will be playing an anti-hero for the first time in this film. “I essay the role of a contract killer while the story deals with my life as it unfolds in Kolkata. But there’s no blood or gory scenes as the action sequences are very slick,” says Surya. The actor has teamed up with KS Ravikumar of Dasavatharam fame in this venture and guarantees that it’s a full-on entertainment flick. “And in a Ravikumar film, every scene conveys a different mood.
Having worked with all the biggies, including Kamal and Rajni sir, he also knows how to cater to different kinds of audiences. We’ve even set our own benchmarks — Ravikumar with Dasavatharam and I, an Ayan,” he explains. The buzz is that Surya does a Benjamin Button in the film — have they been inspired by the Brat Pitt-starrer? “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was about aging backwards. Aadhavan doesn’t deal with such a subject. There’s a sequence in the film in which I play a 10-year-old. It’s a flashback portion and it was quite challenging for a 34-year-old to play that age!” he laughs.
While trade circles were abuzz with the news that another top star’s film, Vijay’s Vettaikaran, will also hit screens on the same day as Aadhavan, Surya clarifies that the film has been postponed by three weeks. Which leaves the actor to compete with Jayam Ravi’s Peranmai and Namitha’s Jaganmohini. “I’m not competing with Namitha or anybody else. Every film-maker makes movies hoping to strike gold at the BO. I wish them the best too. As for Aadhavan, it’s a big-budget film, so yes, we want it to be screened in good theatres,” says Surya.
There are more exciting projects for this Kollywood star. He plays a pukka village cop — his second after the hit Kaakha Kaakha — in Hari’s Singam. After which is Ram Gopal Varma’s Raktha Charithra, his B-town debut. “It’ll go on the floors in February or March and will be released in two parts of two hours each,” he says. But he confesses that he’s not looking at settling down in Mumbai. “I love Chennai and it’s the Tamil audience who’ve made me what I am today.
I’m just doing a Hindi film because I admire some technicians there and have always wanted to work with them. No full-fledged career in Hindi for me,” he shares. Surya’s also looking forward to working with his Ghajini director Murugadoss in a trilingual next year. “It’ll be in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, and we’ll finalize the script soon,” he says. The actor recently sprung a surprise on fans when wife Jyothika and he starred in an ad. Is there a film being planned with the two of them? “Sure, it was a special moment when Jo and I worked together. I’ve always felt that Jo is a better actor than I. But now, I think her priority is our daughter Diya,” concludes Surya.

The svelte Ileana has been living out of suitcases for so long that she’s desperately looking forward to a breather. Luckily for her, Diwali will mean a time to chill out at home (in Goa) as shooting will come to a standstill for four days. The 20-something head turner who’s been shooting back-to-back for the last few months, says with a twinkle in her charcoal eyes: “I am really looking ahead to spending a few quiet days at home. I could just laze around and do nothing, or I could even relax near a poolside. For me that’s a great way to relax and recharge my batteries.” After a long stint at work, the Goa beauty who’s ruling T-town BO, finds “spending time with family” very “de-stressing. I am extremely attached to my parents and siblings.
They are my closest friends and I can bust work-related stress by simply being with them,”she says. In town for a film shoot, after a hectic overseas shooting stint for her Telugu films Rechipo and Saleem, Ileana admits that while she was a trifle “homesick” she “loved every moment” of her work. Working on Rechipo with Nitin was a “fun experience” for her, especially since she seldom has “major expectations from a film.” Ileana insists that she is “happy” to have worked in a “breezy entertainer” and relished essaying an “interesting role”.
Earlier this year, she’s stormed the BO with her runaway hit Kick which catapulted her to the top league. Apparently, post-Kick, the actress has even revised her pay packet and takes home an estimated Rs 1 crore and 10 lakh. “No one pays me a rupee more than what I deserve.But I don’t want to discuss my remuneration at all,” she says cautiously, refusing to divulge any figures. The level-headed actress has been thumbing down Kollywood offers for a while now, including Rajnikanth’s Sultan. Is that a wise move? “I have been getting Tamil film offers for a while now, but I haven’t come across anything interesting yet,” she points out.
And unlike a lot of her contemporaries who are Bollywood bound, Ileana confesses she has no such plans yet. “Only a very meaty role in a Bollywood film would tempt me,”she quips. She’s also known to be extremely selective about work. Is that a conscious decision? “Well, yes. T-town has put me on a pedestal and I have to live up to expectations all the time. I will move out of my comfort zone and do something different only if I am very sure about the role,"she avers.
Coming up is a big-ticket flick where she has a “cute role” with NTR Junior for which “shooting begins in December.” Until then the actress will spend time with her friends and “cats”, “watch loads of movies” and totally “live it up”.
